"What does being an upstander mean to you?"
Announcing our second annual Student Poetry Contest. Cash prizes in two categories, awarded by a panel of judges. Students in grades 6-12 who live in the New Albany area are invited to enter.
Submissions must respond to this question: “What does being an upstander mean to you?”
Winners will be announced on June 6.
A panel of judges will choose two winners in each of two categories (6th-8th graders and 9th-12th graders).
Cash prizes will be $100 for first place and $75 for second place.
Winners may be announced and awarded anonymously if preferred.
Submission Guidelines:
- Must be emailed by May 17, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
- May include (but are not limited to) prose poetry, free verse, formal poetry, song lyrics, and spoken word
- Must be typed or handwritten, with no illustrations, photographs, images, or decorations
- Please use a clear, standard font that is not excessively large or small

- No identifying information, including student names, should appear anywhere in the poems
- Entry email messages (not the poems themselves) should include student name, address, age, grade level, phone number, and school name. (This information will be kept confidential and will be used solely for contest judging and notifications)
- Students may enter up to 3 submissions
- Each submission may contain up to 5 poems, which will be judged as a collection, but each poem must please be titled individually. If submitting a collection, the whole collection should contain 20-200 lines
- Individual poems should have a maximum of 30 lines
- Submissions may be posted on social media by Pride New Albany. All submission posts will be anonymous and will not use student names
